What in the World Is Digital Marketing? (From One Stay-at-Home Mama to Another)
I know mama… Your entire FYP is filled with digital marketing this… digital marketing that…
But what in the world is said “digital marketing” anyway? 🤯
I used to wonder the same exact thing. There was a time I was in the thick of trying to find a way to make money as a stay at home mom. Thanks to the good ‘ole algorithm, it paid attention to what I was searching for and I spent hours on Google and social media trying to figure out what all of these other SAHMs were doing. I watched reel after reel and was able to piece together enough to have a general idea… but I was still stumped when it came to the small details and how it all worked.
And let’s be honest… if you’re anything like me, you’ve come across these videos, too… but the realquestion is “is this even legit?”
Been there, done that, my friend. This blog is for you!
So… What Is Digital Marketing?
Let’s start by breaking this down word by word (because when I saw it this way, a literal light bulb sparked!).
Marketing: promoting your business, a business you work for, or yourself.
Digital: Online. Think emails, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and paid ads.
Digital marketing has been around for ages. But it really blew up during the pandemic. People were home, laid off due to shut downs, or even lost their jobs entirely. But just because you were locked up in your house all day didn’t mean the bills stopped!
If you’re a mama, you know we just naturally figure shit out. And that’s exactly what so many stay at home moms did. We figured out a way to make money online while we were cooped up with our kids and family all day. We essentially turned to the internet, started digital marketing businesses, and never looked back!
Think of digital marketing as an umbrella term. Underneath consists of:
Affiliate marketing: sharing your favorite brands and products then earning a commission when someone makes a purchase.
Digital products: creating simple PDF’s and selling them on repeat. These include how-to guides, checklists, templates, video tutorials, etc.
Done-for-you digital products: purchasing a digital product that’s already done and highly sought after and then reselling it for 100% profit. This is specifically called “MMR”, meaning Master Resell Rights.
User Generated Content (UGC): creating videos of your everyday life using products from certain brands and then partnering with said brand to get paid to promote their products. This typically happens with what’s called “brand deals” and it’s where the content creator will sign a deal for $X amount of money to make X number of videos per month promoting different products. These are simple for everyday life. Get ready with me, spend the morning with me, Sunday reset, etc.
Courses and coaching: creating some type of training, course, or how-to sharing your skills and teaching other people how to do something. Coaching can look like group coaching, 1:1 coaching, private Facebook groups, weekly LIVE’s—whatever fits your lifestyle! (But don’t think you have to be pro here. I’m not talking about teaching someone something because you have a degree or a fancy title… You just simply need to be one step ahead of someone else.)
I follow so many social media pages of people who are just great at things from homeschooling, making fresh foods, growing gardens, and sharing fun family activities. They’re not gurus. They don’t have masters in these areas. They’ve just been doing it for a long time and have some incredible advice.
And you want to know how they’re making money from it?
They’re creating simple guides about how to ____. And people are buying them like hotcakes!
They’re selling video tutorials of exactly how to make their simple yet famous recipe of ____. And people are eating it up! (Quite literally!)
Not pros… just one step ahead of someone else!
Why Are So Many Stay-at-Home Moms Talking About It?
Those videos you’re watching of them making their famous sourdough bread? That was filmed in their own kitchen with their kids running around like madmen and Boss Baby playing in the background on 100.
That how-to guide they created? They created it one time from their laptop on the couch during the mom cracks of life and now they sell it on repeat. Even work from home jobs still require you to clock in, spend a certain amount of time on the clock, and produce a specified amount of work. Digital Marketing fits around sports schedules, appointments, school activities, dishes, laundry, and everything in between!
The flexibility of digital marketing is essentially the main reason why so many stay-at-home moms are leaning on this to earn an income.
For example, I created a free mini course that does a deep dive into different ways to make money online as a stay at home mom. I made that entire video from my dining room table while my kids were running amuck through the house!
I record content, post to social media, respond to comments, even offer 1:1 client calls during my everyday life! I’ve been able to build an entire business around my lifestyle and what’s most important rather than having to find a way to build my life around a full-time career.
I respond to emails in the school pickup line.
I post my videos after I drop my kids off at school while I’m sitting on the couch drinking coffee.
I take random pictures and videos of my day-to-day–add them to my story and include links to make sales.
No boss.
No timelines.
Nobody is hovering over me or measuring my productivity.
Just me, my phone or laptop, earning an income from home with whatever the day brings!
So, Is Digital Marketing Actually a Legitimate Way to Make Money?
If you hear anything at all, hear this… Not only is digital marketing a legitimate business model, it’s one of the simplest ways to earn an income—especially for busy SAHMs.
Why?
Because a digital marketing business is designed to run non-stop.
It’s designed to run in the background while you’re folding laundry and dealing with the 5th meltdown of the day.
It’s designed to run while you’re playing taxi driver trying to get 3 kids to 3 different places.
Having an online business gives you the opportunity to set up systems that are automated. When someone comments on your post asking for more info, you have an automated system that DM’s them the link or the info they’re looking for. (And thank God, because you’re knees deep in bathing the dog who just came in outside from his favorite mud puddle!)
And then you set up automated emails that send out to your followers to keep them in the loop, keep conversations going, and include your products in these messages. Which means, while you’re slaving over dinner (that you’re still unsure if your kids will eat 🙃), an automated email goes out and you earn money without ever being present online.
I get the skepticism.
Anything “online” seems sketchy. The number of scams are outrageous. And the effort it takes to decode if something is real or not is like a physical sport.
I totally get it.
But I can also say that there are real, genuine folks out there who are simply sharing what they know with hopes of making your life easier. Like me, for example! (My kids are currently wrestling and screaming in the back room while I’m writing this blog. But I’m doing this because my goal is to help as many stay-at-home mamas as possible learn how to make money from home! Now BRB… I have to make sure this isn’t going too far.)
And honestly, had I not taken a chance on a complete stranger I came across on Instagram 3 years ago, no telling how long it would have taken me to get where I am now.
My advice? Find your person. Find someone who makes you feel seen, heard, and understands your struggles. Those are the people to stick with.
Is Digital Marketing Right For You?
The biggest hurdle after you learn what it’s all about is deciphering if a digital marketing business is the right fit for you and your lifestyle.
I can’t stress enough how flexible this journey is!
So when it comes to schedules, time management, and everyday life—the answer is always yes!
Are you really good at something?
Is there something that people always come to you about for help or advice?
Do you genuinely enjoy helping people?
Do you need flexibility?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, digital marketing is one of the simplest ways to start learning how to make money from home.
Not because it’s easy… or fast money…
But because it’s sustainable… and fits into your everyday life.
So How Do I Get Started As A Complete Beginner?
I used to be ashamed to admit how many online courses I’ve bought over the years. But then I realized that I will always be a student. No matter how far I come in my business.
And with that being said, I’ll always be investing in new education.
But there’s a fine line between purchasing a course and investing in an online course that will truly teach you everything from A-Z and provide you with a community of like-minded people who are on the same path as yourself.
Trust me… the community matters. Because not everyone in your circle will understand. And that’s okay!
The Digital Wealth Academy (DWA) is, hands down, the education and community I recommend anyone to check out. After joining this community and learning how to start an online business from scratch and scale multiple streams of income, it was the first time I didn’t wonder what to do next. (Be cautious of this. Some courses teach you just enough and then want you to purchase something different to learn the next step. 🤨)
DWA has over 100 hours of training modules, $60M+ in student earnings, and over 130,000 students worldwide.(1) Those stats are credibility. And the proof is in the pudding, as my grandma would say!
DWA teaches multiple different ways to earn and build your online biz from scratch including:
Affiliate Marketing
Digital Products
Make money with Amazon
TikTok Shop
Youtube Monetization
Dropshipping
UGC
Facebook, Pinterest, & Instagram
Content creation
And so much more
